This past summer window saw Real Madrid make attempts to bring in a new elite forward but the club ended up failing in their endeavours.
A move for Erling Haaland had been talked about and discussions had been held with his environment over a possible move. However, at the same time, Kylian Mbappe was also on the Merengues’ agenda and negotiations with the Frenchman’s camp were also underway.
It seemed like Real Madrid will certainly sign Mbappe in the summer, which prompted Haaland to opt for Manchester City instead. And while the Norwegian moved to the Etihad, Mbappe did not arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu, instead opting to renew with PSG in a last-minute swerve.
However, Real Madrid still remain intent on adding an elite goalscorer to their ranks in the future and see Haaland as the ideal candidate, especially after how things went down with Mbappe this past summer.
And the door to make a move for the Norwegian international remains open, according to AS. Real Madrid had tried to convince the Manchester City striker to move to the Bernabeu this past summer but ended up failing.
However, as per the report, Los Blancos once again plan to persuade Haaland to join forces with them in the summer of 2024, when a release clause in his contract becomes active.
It is believed that the 22-year-old has a €180 million exit clause embedded in his contract with Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola has denied its existence while his agent, Rafaela Pimenta has also been coy on the matter.
But the clause is said to exist and is valid for teams outside the Premier League. And Real Madrid want to make the most of it by swooping in for Haaland in 2024.
The reigning champions of Spain and Europe are believed to have a strategy in place to sign the Norwegian as well, as they believe Karim Benzema will step down in two years’ time, given that the Frenchman will soon be turning 35.
Whether the Merengues can persuade Haaland to trade City for Madrid only two years after he joined Guardiola’s side remains to be seen.
